It seems especially fitting that the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent ‘60s, should have at its center a social and political rebel. Jesus’ meteor-like rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As his radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increassingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.
As a stage production, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR began life under a cloud of doubt; therefore, it came to life as a record first. By the time the production hit the stage, the music was well known by people everywhere. It was the first Broadway musical to have begun this way; allowing for emphasis on musicality over plot and staging. In 1971, the production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR opened on Broadway where it ran for 711 performances at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR remains an extremely popular stage production throughout the world to this day.
Elgin Summer Theatre (EST) is happy to be returning to the stage with the theatrical gem that is JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR will be directed by Charlie Brieger of Elgin, and is the fifth production for the EST. Other productions have included Hair, Grease, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and the 2011 production of Annie. Sponsored by the City of Elgin’s Cultural Arts Commission, EST is a showcase for local and regional talent. “Elgin Summer Theatre is not community theatre,” says Brieger, “but theatre done by the community for the community”
